Statistics

Millions of people fly safely every day. In fact, statistics show that the odds of dying in an airplane accident are 1-in-20,000 compared with 1-in-100 for an auto accident and 1-in-5 from heart disease. However over 25 million people in the world that are terrified of flying. The phobia varies from those who simply do not enjoy flying to those who are too scared to board a plane. About half of these 25 million plus people are afraid of actual plane crashes and the other half fear flying for a number of different reasons.

Reasons

There are many reasons people ignore statistics and let themselves develop a fear of flying. The news is a big factor because they will report in great detail for days, even weeks, about a plane crash. This increases people's anxiety level. These same news programs do not mention how many perfectly safe flights occurred that same week.

Another reason that people fear flying is that they do not like the fact that they are not in control and do not completely know what's happening. On a plane a person has no choice but to sit back and ride.
